They didn't remember if it was another meandering memo or the predictable presentation, but they decided to leave the technology sector. Their nomad existence from Massachusetts to Washington to Minnesota didn't help either. So, in 1993, an impulsive career change led to a mid-life, fly by the seat of their pants into the restaurant business. They purchased a full-service, 20-room country inn with a 100-seat restaurant in the Berkshires in Massachusetts and opened for business Labor Day Weekend, 1994.
Over time, they learned what their customers wanted. Annual Wine Spectator awards followed. They hosted musicians twice weekly and soon became an attraction for musicians in the tri-state area.
Along the way, their training amounted to dining experiences around the country. They paid attention to what worked and what didn't. After 14 years, they moved East and bought a small 65-seat cafe in a Boston suburb. After a successful run, they turned in their reservation book. The notes of their experiences were collected and organized.
They remembered how they felt when treated well and avoided places where no one seemed to care.
